Wind around 10 knots for the Puig Women America’s cup final in Barcelona, between Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and the British Athena Pathway. In an America’s Cup that has historically been virtually exclusively male-dominated, this final may have important value for the future, with the hope of seeing women on official Cup boats as early as next year and not just on the 40′. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli does not miss the appointment, and goes on to win the race against Athena with authority, leading from start to finish. The British never quite break away from the wake of the Italians, but in fact the regatta never reopens and is never in dispute. Giulia Conti, Margherita Porro, Maria Giubilei and Giulia Fava, in the team also Giovanna Micol, Maria Vittoria Marchesini and Alice Linussi, win the first edition of the women’s America’s Cup.
Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli vs. Athena Pathway
Luna Rossa enters left tack and goes after the British, managing to gybe on the bow of her opponents and keeps close downwind of Athena to bother her. Good news for the Italian girls, who hold position, put their noses ahead and take their first lead after tacking on the left boundary. The British, however, keep close and potentially threatening in this second part of the first windward mark. Luna Rossa in the lead at the windward gate, but British immediately following. First small stretch by the Italians at the start of the downwind, also proving to be very solid in maneuvering, despite conditions made a bit complicated by a wave greater than the wind strength. In the second upwind, Giulia Conti and Margherita Porro immediately applied themselves in marking, trying not to leave any separation to the English, consolidating 70-80 meters of advantage that seemed precious. Also because in the second downwind, despite a couple of bad waves, the Italians do not tremble. Luna Rossa stretches in the last upwind, goes on the run in the final stern, and goes on to win the first edition of the Puig Women America’s Cup. Luna Rossa thus wins the Youth America’s Cup and the Women’s Cup, proving to be a team with great resources, strong and young talent, which bodes well for the team’s future. Perhaps, however, in light of the level of the union, there still grows a bit of regret about how the Louis Vuitton v. Britannia final went. We talk about it today at 6:30 p.m. on Trial of the Cup, live on YouTube and Facebook, Mauro Giuffrè and Luca Sordelli’s guests will be Medea Falcioni, Luca Bassani, Giovanni Ceccarelli, Francesco Bertone, Daniele Cassinari and Ida Castiglioni.
