In this video, Italian-Brazilian Elio Samaschini (born 1949 in Seregno, Brianza, Italy) recounts his journey around the world, from 2006 to 2013, without the use of navigation tools. Instead of the sextant, the navigator used his hand to measure the position of the stars. In Brazil he is already a myth.
AROUND THE WORLD WITHOUT TOOLS
First a physicist, then an entrepreneur in Brazil, Elio Somaschini has a background first on windsurfing and then on the Hobie Cat. His first sailboat was a 39-footer on which, he admits, “I screwed up every way I could. I ran aground, sailed with too much canvas and took big risks.”
Then he has the opportunity to buy the First 40.7 Crapun (which means “hard head” in Milanese dialect): it is love at first sight and Somaschini decides to set off on a world tour that is more than seven years in the making. “Sailing turns physics into poetry,” he said.
