How to lower the gennaker is the theme of the new video-episode of Sailing School. The classic lowering is the maneuver that most frightens less experienced crews, so much so that is often not even considered, for fear of not being able to lower it.
How to lower the gennaker when cruising
Lowering the gennaker, on modern cruising boats, is easier if it is equipped with a stocking. The gennaker is either rigged on the dolphin boat or on a bowsprit and hoisted wrapped in a stocking, which then remains at the masthead while sailing.
The stocking is adopted on both cruising boats and catamarans, and has the following advantages:
- The lowering maneuver is separate from the sock closure
- The speed and coordination of a classic lowering is not required
- It folds itself inside the stocking, so it is more convenient to store it in the bag
- Fearless gybing: You can close the stocking, then tack aft, and rearm the gennaker!
