50 Years of Baltic Yachts: a Rendez Vous in style to celebrate half a century of success

In 1974, for the first time, it saw the water “Diva,” the first Baltic ever launched, the first of 7 46-footers destined to crown the efforts of 5 highly gifted shipbuilders, propelling the then fledgling shipyard into the pantheon of great shipbuilding. It has been 50 years since the start of that first project, developed from 1973 in collaboration with Canadians Cuthbertson & Cassian, and Baltic Yachts duly celebrates its first half-century with a spectacular Rendez Vous.

Sardinia, Porto Rotondo. There are more than 400 attendants, including owners and crews. Instead, there are 29 boats, in a size stretch that covers from the 10-meter Baltic 33 Vèlite II (1975) to the 44.6-meter Baltic 146 Path (2021), the largest of the present boats. An audience of participants came from all over, with hulls and crews coming from all over Europe, but also from Australia and New Zealand, Canada and America. In short, a pool of the most diverse backgrounds, generations (of hulls as well as people) and backgrounds all gathered in the beautiful Sardinian setting to celebrate this new milestone for the shipyard with a regatta held among the islands of the archipelago. 50 Years of Baltic Yachts – The Rendez Vous and the Regatta

Hosted by the Costa Smeralda at the Yacht Club Porto Rotondo, the Baltic fleet started the races under the direction of race officer Gianluca Brambati, who managed the event in a cheerful and highly appreciated manner -crews and witnesses report. Obviously, although it was a rendez vous, there was no shortage of competition among the various crews, regardless of displacements, creating an atmosphere of friendly competitiveness that saw the winner, above all, the
Baltic 39 Nana III
(1981), which came all the way from the Baltic Sea to take part in the event.

Obviously divided over three categories, there were many boats stealing admiring glances as they paraded between the islands of Soffi and Mortorio, an integral part of the race course. These include, in addition to the Classic Boat -12 Baltic 70s-90s signed by C&C and Farr in attendance- certainly made their mark with the three Baltic 67 PCs signed Judel/Vrolijk (Freedom, Lurigna and Manyeleti), as well as the Baltic 68 Café Racer Pink Gin Green, signed by Javier Jaudenes, spokesman for the brand’s green credentials.

There was also no shortage of heavyweights, such as the Baltic 58 Mini Y, the 152 ‘
Scorpion of London
(formerly Pink Gin) and the 112′ and 117′, respectively.
Shagala Balaga
(formerly Nilaya) and
Perseverance
. Also present and racing the Baltic 108
Win Win
and the87′
Shaya
(formerly Anny). Towering over all, however, was the Baltic 146 Path, impressive in its intersections with its smaller sisters. Not racing, but present, the ever-present Baltic 142
Canova
with its DSS sliding foils.

A festive atmosphere ashore as well, including events aimed at promoting sustainability, crew dinners and award ceremonies, where each class winner, moreover, received vases by the great Finnish designer Alvar Aalto as prizes. Making everyone happy, however, there was no shortage of a general prize received by each shipowner: a wooden box built at the shipyard’s facilities containing a bottle of Finnish gin.
