Ugly training swamping in Cagliari for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli‘s AC 40 on a tense Mistral day. The Italian team is continuing two-boat tests in Sardinia, between Leq 12 and AC40, and in one of them the accident occurred that left no consequences for the crew.

AC 40 – What a bang!
The swamping occurred coming out of a tack. The Italian AC40 was rehearsing a maneuver in some ways similar to the one that led to American Magic’s disastrous capsize in Auckland during the 2020 Cup: immediate upwind, tacking and resting in a stiff breeze estimated to be above 15 knots. A maneuver that if performed in high winds carries quite a few risks. It can be seen from the video that both foil arms are down, but the crew is not in time to call the upwind one back at the end of the tack because the ballasting starts.
Leaning “brutally” out of the tack change can cause the boat to increase its foiling height dangerously, bringing the appendages (rudder and foil) into contact with the surface. If the foil blades suck in air, loss of control is guaranteed, and that is what probably happened to AC 40 Luna Rossa.
An official report of the release has not yet been uploaded to Recon, the database of spies following the America’s Cup. Luna Rossa itself, however, on its Facebook profile speaks of “Young Guns,” most likely on board were Marco Gradoni and some of the other Young people on the team, who are actively participating in training these weeks, rotating with the seniors aboard the Leq 12 and AC 40.
