Passion for sailing condensed into a photo. A beautiful photo.
At 89 years old racing on the Lasers
The gentleman above, busy aboard his ILCA (former Laser, Olympic class), is named Claude Tigier and is from France. Most importantly, he is 89 years old. Eighty-nine, best written at length. Tigier is participating, along with other aging sailors (but no one is as aged as he is) in the ILCA European Masters Championship in Vilamoura, Portugal. His category is “Legends,” the category reserved for the over-75s. By the way, he got off to a great start with a ninth place in the first of the trials held.
Then again, he has plenty of experience: 65 years old, to be precise, as Tigier, a native of Saint Quentin, Haute-France, began his career at age 24 on the legendary 505.
Sailing extends life. So many examples
Congratulations Monsieur Tigier, for demonstrating, once again, how sailing extends life.
We will never tire of repeating it. Do you remember the story of Angela Besana Gagliardi, the 100-year veteran helmswoman of the VELA Cup? How about that of Sven Yrvind, who set off from Sweden in the direction of New Zealand in a 5-meter boat at the age of 78? What about the over-80 laserist, Japan’s Haruyoshi Kumera? These are just a few, very few examples of how sailing keeps you young. Then again, science says it too: sailing extends life and reduces blood pressure…
