Setting sail, leaving everything behind, whether it be for a weekend, or for however long we want, is a thought that may have tended to catch most among us. So is sailing as a duo, if not even alone. Now, while this often remains little more than a thought, why not properly contemplate it anyway? With that in mind, here are 6 little tidbits made (almost) specifically for that. Be warned, however, that the disposition of some of these can tend to be decidedly privateering….

Six ‘compact’ Classic Boats to sail short-handed ‘serenely’

The panorama concerning the Classic Boats -that is, production boats over 25 years old and launched since 1967-. is a vast and ever-expanding context, composed of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to the Classic Boat Club and to our information sections, we have created a series of articles, aimed at exploring some exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating (you can find each article, 40+, at the bottom of this one). In this specific case, as announced, it is our turn to look at 6 great little Classic Boats, iconic designs perfect for sailing only, o short-handed…

  • Classic Boat enthusiasts? or sailing in general? There is great news! The Classic Boat Club, the community dedicated to all fans of the ‘vintage’ world, a place for appreciating and sharing the design culture of the last century. Become a member: it’s super easy and offers lots of benefits. Find out all about it HERE!

METEOR

specifications: Comar; 6.0 x 2.13 m; 1968; Van de Stadt

Let us start, perhaps mistakenly, with the splendid little Meteor. Granted, she was not born for solo, let alone cruising, but she is a brilliant hull to say the least, and certainly does not preclude short-handed sailing. Designed by Van de Stadt and produced beginning in 1968, the Meteor is in fact a design with a miraculous flavor, capable of encapsulating, in just 6 meters, an unquenched passion for more than 55 years. Easy, fun and timeless, it is much more than a ‘pop’ hull. It is, fundamentally, the boat truly for everyone.

POGO 6.50

specifications: Pogo Structures; 6.5 x 2.97 m; 1995; Pierre Rolland

In 1995 the Mini Transat is won by a prototype, Amnesty International. The hull, no less, will prove to be an undisputed success, very fast and versatile. That said, a very small series is produced, 25 hulls. Everyone, however, wants one. Thus comes the newly revised second series: 99 more hulls. Thus is born one of the icons of the 1990s Mini front, Pierre Rolland’s brilliant Pogo 6.50. Perfect and iconic.

TÉ SALT CR

specs: Felci; 6.5 x 2.70 m; 1996; Felci Yacht Design

1996, a very young Felci landed in France, following the tide of the legendary Mini Transat, kingdom of the French. Here, he introduces a little gem, a 6.5-meter that is fast, innovative and full of original solutions. It is the Té Salt and it will be a success. Not for nothing, soon after, its series was born, the Té Salt CR, launched in no less than 34 examples, giving birth to a small missile dedicated to true enthusiasts. This one, yes, is designed for solo or short-handed. And it still deserves to this day.

POGO 8.50

specifications: Pogo Structures; 8.5 x 3.6 m; 1999; Pierre Rolland

If the Pogo 6.50 was a success, so was the big sister. In 1999, in fact, came the Pogo 8.50, a masterpiece: Michel Mirabel ranked first with his 8.50 at the 1999 Transquadra Solo; in 2001 it became boat of the year, a total of 180 examples. In short, a gem. Simple, solid, light and still spacious, the Pogo 8.50 has indeed redefined the standards, boat excellent in performance, marine like few and convertible for spartan cruising. Cult.

FIGARO SOLO

specs: Beneteau; 9.14 x 3.25 m; 1990; Jean Marie Finot & Jean Berret

Developed for the Solitaire du Figaro regatta, in 1990 Beneteau had Finot and Berret sign a hull that was nothing short of excellent. Appreciated from the start, it is the Figaro Solo, a hull that kicked off a series that is still more than active today. From its earliest version it was characterized by a powerful sail on fractional rigging with flying rigging, resulting in a fast hull, strong synthetic foam sandwich with structural counter-molding and efficient weight distribution. In short, an incredible hull from which quite a few other creatures from the shipyard will be derived.

RUSTLER 36

specs: Rustler Yachts ; 10.77 x 3.35 m; 1980; Holman & Pye

A boat perhaps unexpected after its predecessors, but there’s nothing to it: if you take any solo-vintage, the Rustler 36 is the designated hull, the coveted design. Classic lines, heavy displacement, long keel and impeccable marine capabilities. It is a cult of British boating, a solid, durable boat and, basically, a bluewater with a handle: it goes everywhere. Not surprisingly, it won the Golden Globe 2018 “vintage” solo round-the-world race, demonstrating how it is indeed a top boat for this kind of activity-a must for serious sailing. Moreover, it is still in production. Ask Jean-Luc Van Den Heede to believe.
