The sun, when sailing, is the ideal companion to replenish vitamin D, essential to the well-being of the bones and the good mood of every sailor. Yet, on a boat, that same light can turn in an instant into the eyes’ worst enemy: the reflections on the water and the long hours spent in the clear sky really test your eyesight. In fact, special attention should be paid to the choice of glasses, always wearing polarized lenses, which are capable of filtering UV rays-these are generally better than traditional lenses because they allow the reduction of reflections and the improvement of visual clarity in very bright conditions, especially if you are at the helm. In these conditions it is important to choose an index of 3 or 4, depending on the location and intensity of the sun: good eye protection is an essential part of every sailor’s personal, and professional, equipment.

But let’s take a closer look at what the characteristics of a good pair of sunglasses should be, which should not only screen out visible light, but also ultraviolet radiation, which is stronger and more damaging to the retina because of the dangerous glare to which our eyes are constantly subjected. In fact, not many people know that UV light also causes “sunburn” to the eyes. This is why sailing sunglasses must be “specialized”: to improve the perception of colors by making them more vivid and contrasted, to reduce eye fatigue and finally improve visual comfort. Wearing sunglasses on a boat also becomes essential when the sky is gray or the days are particularly windy. Modern frames serve not only to defend you from light, and there are very light and trendy models on the market today that provide complete protection. And that you can wear even once you disembark.
