5 Classic Boats from 12.65 to 12.90 meters

Now in its 15th installment of this review of the
Classic Boats of Historical Value
we will have a chance to engage with projects and designers that are nothing short of iconic. The incredible Alpa 12.70 designed by Sparkman & Stephens or Jeppesen’s great “trendsetter,” theX-412 Sports, to name a couple, outstanding and sincerely significant boats in the boating scene of their period, covering a range from the late 1960s, to the waning of the IOR, with the 1990s and the introduction of the IMS. In short, 5 disruptive series boats, whether for racing or more comfortable cruising and, inevitably, 5 memorable Classic Boats between 12.65 and 12.90 meters.

ALPA 12.70

Alpa | 12.65 x 3.48 m | 1969 | Sparkman & Stephens

A real “treat.” It is one of the best Sparkman & Stephens projects of the period. Built by Alpa with great care, it was produced in only 15 examples, long or short deckhouse. The only four short deckhouse examples are a small masterpiece. Winner at the time in offshore racing.

GRAND SOLEIL 42

Pardo Shipyard | 12.65 x 4.05 m | 1989 | German Frers

With 130 units produced, the younger brother of the 52′ – whose design it traces – is one of the great successes of the Romagna shipyard at the time. It is distinguished by the large single rudder wheel and the Frers lines of the times.

BALTIC 42 DP

Baltic | 12.78 x 4.06m | 1981 | Doug Peterson

The first boat designed by Doug Peterson for Baltic. The result is excellent, the boat is beautiful, with a particularly streamlined line, to such an extent that 30 examples were produced. A great example of an IOR boat.

X-412 SPORT

X-Yachts | 12.90 x 3.91 m | 1990 | Niels Jeppesen

It is the first model in X-Yachts’ Performance Cruiser segment. Totally lost the IOR influence, it was designed to better respond to the new IMS handicaps. Immediate success, what we would call a ‘trendsetter’ today. Produced in 252 examples in about 10 years, it set the standard for many boats to come.

Classic Boats. OCEANIS 430

Beneteau | 12.96 x 4.22 m | 1986 | Philippe Briand

The same year as theOceanis 350 saw the birth of its big brother, theOceanis 430, which is even more harmonious, with a flat deckhouse that makes it look almost like a “flush deck.” Briand also designs the interior volumes that make it seem larger than its 13 meters.
