X-Yachts – X-332

The landscape relating to Classic Boats-that is, production boats over twenty-five years old and launched since 1967-is a vast and ever-expanding one, made up of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to the Classic Boat Club and our informational sections, we have created a series of articles, aimed, yard by yard, or intended use by intended use, at exploring some exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating. In this case, we look again at the world of performance-cruisers, with 5 striking examples born in the 1990s. Compact (10 m), versatile and signed by the greatest masters, here are 5 Classics to continue, 25+ years later, to race and relax, which of the two options is to be preferred is up to you to decide

5 90s compact performance cruisers (10 meters)

In the previous article related to the world of Classic Boats we looked at 5 1980s Performance Cruisers between 12.5 and 16 meters. If one wanted to keep prices and tonnage down, however, where to look? What does the “classic” market offer? The answer, in this case, comes from the 1990s in the form of 5 hulls that are nothing short of excellent, 5 Cult 10-meter hulls born to win among the buoys and offer more than the minimum necessary to be more than usable while cruising. From Vismara to Vallicelli, from Jeppesen to J&J, here are 5 hulls not to be underestimated if you are looking for a performance cruiser that, in addition to being compact, can also provide not a few satisfactions, whether these are on vacation or racing.

GRAND SOLEIL 34.1

specifications: Cantiere del Pardo; 10 x 3.27 m; 1999; Alessandro Vismara

In 1999, Cantiere del Pardo launched a small 10-meter boat destined to make waves. It is the Grand Soleil 34.1, signed by Vismara on the outside, by Roséo on the inside. Compact, versatile and profoundly sporty, it will be a hull capable of combining cruising and racing in the best possible way, offering yes, a cozy and well-kept interior, but creating a balance capable of performing in the racing world as well. The leeway is minimal, the difference between waterline and out-all is very small, and the hull is racing. In short, a hull that is fast, fun, yet capable of accommodating at its best. An option to consider if you want to keep the volumes compact, without sacrificing anything else.

X-332

specifications: X-Yachts; 10.06 x 3.30 m; 1994; Niels Jeppesen

Barely longer than its predecessor, with the X-332 we look at another compact but very complete Cruiser-Racer. At 10.06 meters long, it is in fact one of Jeppesen and the yard’s great successes, and not for nothing will be built in well over 430 examples. Cruiser-racer by definition, today with perhaps more of a cruiser soul, she is nevertheless a hull capable of good speeds,,, so much so that she has won several major titles, including the IMS Italian championship in 2001. Comfortable below deck, performing on the water, she is a complete package for those looking for a medium-sized hybrid, a, boat with which to spend both quiet weekends and exciting sailing outings, including racing.

DUFOUR 334 TROPHY

specifications: Dufour; 10.30 x 3.35 m; 1999; J&J

In 1999 Dufour launched a hull like few others among those it can boast (and, if you look at the early days, they are not few). With the 334 Trophy, in fact, a hull full of ambition was born, a boat that perhaps does not really look to cruising, although it does not deny it to anyone. The 334, in fact, is a Dufour that wants to race. And the water lines underscore this, thin in sections, with a contained beam and minimal momentum. In short, J&J signed a Dufour to keep between the buoys. Today, all things considered, for fun, the rule may not fail.

ESTE 35

specifications: Cantiere d’Este; 10.70 x 3.27 m; 1991; Andrea Vallicelli

Early 1990s, Vallicelli signs a 35-footer for the Fiumicino shipyard. The result is an Italian hull that is often forgotten, but absolutely not to be underestimated. Large sail area, minimal wetted surface area and light displacement make it in fact a small bolide, a boat that knows how to perform without, however, losing its cruising potential. If you are looking for a hull that knows how to say its piece, compact in feet and cost, and with a comfortable and complete interior, perhaps the Este 35 may be for you.

X-362

specifications: X-Yachts; 10.70 x 3.48 m; 1993; Niels Jeppesen

She was not born as a cruiser, but sometimes the least likely things happen. It certainly happens with the X-362, conceived by Jeppesen to be a hull suitable for family cruising, but immediately capable of proving its worth in racing. X-Yachts quickly realizes this and adjusts its aim. In a very short time, with a modified keel, rudder and mast, the “sport” version is born, that is, the one “pulled” for racing. Somehow, the little game works, and the 362 expresses itself even better. A hull, in short, for those who do not seek compromise, but demand both, in already more than modest volumes.
