The “History” section of the Special Anniversary 50th Anniversary issue of the Journal of Sailing

We have already told you why the Special Anniversary 50 Years issue of the Journal of Sailing, now on newsstands and digital(and if you subscribe, you get it as a gift, until July 20 and while supplies last!) is unique, iconic, collectible.

The history of sailing in 240 pages

It is a summa, in 240 pages, of what is the history of GdV and consequently of sailing, in Italy and in the world. Not to mention the metallic silver-gold cover, also unique, in laminated paper printed by a special machine: we could only celebrate half a century of our newspaper’s life this way!

Today GdV Deputy Editor Eugenio Ruocco, in this video, tells you about the first of the four major sections into which the Special Anniversary 50 Years issue of the Journal of Sailing is divided, the History section.

What you will find in the “History” section

The 1975-2025 covers. In this first section you will find the reconstruction, in chronological order, of half a century of sailing history through 50 iconic covers of the Giornale della Vela. From the “Fogar case” that broke out in the pages of the fledgling GdV in 1975 to Italy’s double Olympic gold medalists (Tita-Banti and Maggetti) in 2024. In between, the Ocean, the great adventures, the races, the tragedies, the technology applied to boats evolving, year after year.

The evolution of boats 1975-2025. In these pages we explain how sailboats have changed in fifty years. The fiberglass revolution that transformed the boat from a one-of-a-kind to a mass-produced item, the advent of design software for hulls and sails, the first set of rollable sails that paved the way for easy sailing. And then, of course, the phenomenon of “house boats” with interior spaces similar to those of an apartment (if not exactly like villas, in the case of catamarans) and the last of the momentous changes, however, coming straight from the late 1800s: foils that make boats fly.

Facts 1975-2025. Year by year, from 1975 to 2024, in this section we have selected the “milestones” in the history of sailing and GdV. From that cursed orca that sank Giorgio Falck’s Guia. in 1976 through the adventures of Azzurra, Luna Rossa, Il Moro di Venezia. and peri “adieu” of the great sailors. Tabarly, Moitessier, Straulino…
