GdV 50 Years, how the “We & You” section was born.

We had a dream. To realize, together with you, the great “sea lover” mural: we searched the archives for symbolic images of the history of sailing, the sea and yachting, then we asked for your help. How?

By launching the “Submit Your Photo” section on our website.. The community that follows the Sailing Newspaper every month, both in the magazine, and on the website, social, newsletters and videos is about 2,000,000 people: “Among sea lovers we understand each other,” we said to each other, “let’s try to ask all our followers.” So, for a couple of months on our site you could upload all the photos you wanted: wishes, dreams, fears, reflections, sailings, baths, anything.

Even, simply, what you could see from the boat or the couch at home. All photos were fine, even those taken in the past and jealously preserved on your smartphones or in your archives. All you had to do was indicate the author of the shot, an email and a short caption.

A few days after we launched the initiative, we couldn’t believe our eyes. Hundreds and hundreds of images were coming in, continuously. And, trust us, they keep coming as we are writing these lines, we are at more than a thousand. The “latecomers” will forgive us for not being able to put up their images. What did we receive? The essence of the purest sailing, declined in many forms. Your boating vacations, animals on board, philosophical musings, “witty fuck-ups,” old scans of black-and-white images you “came out” to testify to your ancient passion for sailing.

We jumped through hoops to select the ones you find in this special issue. The result? Judge for yourself by running to the newsstand (the magazine remains available until August 31) or by subscribing(if you do so by July 20 for you the Special issue is a gift!). Thank you to all of you who participated in this great work of collective ingenuity: the first real mural on paper by the Sea Lovers of the Sail Newspaper.
