The year 2025 marks the 50th birthday of the Journal of Sailing. But not only that. In fact, it is also the launch year of the brand new Classic Boat Club, the initiative that aims to celebrate and restore life to all beautiful boats over 25 years old, whatever their history and size. After all, how best to celebrate a milestone similar than by celebrating the real protagonists who made it possible, the boats themselves?
That is why the Classic Boat Club, and that is why it is open to all of them, regardless of whether they are one-offs or production, IOR or IMS, dinghies or maxis. But it is the latter that we want to beat on this occasion. Make no bones about size, any boat, as long as it is true to its original spirit, can be a Classic Boat to be enhanced! Tonnage and LOA matter little. Here is an example of that!
Classic Boat: size does not matter for a boat to be ‘historic’
As a gathering place and a platform intended to unite and inform enthusiasts, the Classic Boat Club makes few discriminations. One can join either with or without a boat, and in the latter case, there are only 3 limits: the hull must be launched after 1967, it must be more than 25 years old since the launch (of the first model in the series, if not one-off) and, although upgrades are accepted, the original design must not be distorted. That said, free everyone, regardless of size. That is why, as of now, you will find here hulls from 4 to 20+ meters…
David vs. Goliath
Let’s start with the smallest of the registered boats, Let the Motherfuc*er Burn, none other than a Vaurien wooden, a small (4.08 meters) jewel from 1972. Born in the early 1970s, this small Vaurien was salvaged in a total state of neglect and, through painstaking philological restoration, has returned to enjoy new life. Made entirely of mahogany () she is now also a well-deserving boat of the Vaurien Class. Her recovery is documented, and took over 100 days of work….

On the other side, we find the ‘big one’ on duty, Phantom, the only example of the C&C 66, designed by the Canadian duo Couberthson & Cassian and dating back to 1973. At 20.15 meters long, this cult IOR was built by C&C Yachts according to the then innovative double-sandwich technique of balsa, fiberglass and Kevlar, taking inspiration from the successful C&C 61 series designed by the architects of the same name. As a good one-off, it was the child of several experiments and brilliant insights, soon proving to be an excellent design. Today, Phantom endures, enjoying new thanks to the initiative “Phantom Believe in Youth”, which sees it as a school bench for young people, a tool for growth for the younger generation, to whom it offers means and insenga skills aimed at offshore sailing and all that it entails.

Given the extremes, however, the Classic Boat Club is also the platform for everyone. And here, between Grand Soleils of every tonnage, Baltic, all the big series and One-Offs of every breed, every boat is welcome, valued and pampered here. In a nutshell, once again, the Classic Boat Club and its Official Register of Classic Boats of Historical Value are open to all. Below, for those interested, find ways to register your Classic Boat as well and all the benefits attached!

Classic Boat Cult | 10 meters overall: an outstanding segment (to be recovered) – pt.2
If, of all people, there is one segment that has declined in recent times, without a doubt, it is the 10-meter segment. Just think back to the ‘classic’ design, to the 1960s, 1970s, and even 1980s: 10-meter hulls were stately
