Winning a sailing rainbow title is a huge satisfaction. Winning it in one’s own land is even more so. Maddalena Spanu, born in 2006, from Cagliari (but living in Oristano), is the first women’s Formula Wing world champion in history. She was the strongest with her foil-equipped flying board and the “wing,” which is the sail you maneuver with the strength of your arms.
Maddalena Spanu’s enterprise.
The 18-year-old, an athlete in the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s Young Azzurra program, won the first Formula Wing Absolute World Championship in Porto Cervo, also valid as a leg of the WingFoil Racing World Cup.
The world championship was characterized by difficult and variable weather conditions, from light wind to intense Mistral, allowing the organization to complete as many as 19 qualifying trials between long and short distance Race.

A real feat, that of Maddalena Spanu, who won the world title by manifesting great superiority and leaving behind her French Vaina Picot and Greek Aimilia Kosti
During the qualifying trials, Magdalena always came out on top of the fleet. A week in which she tested herself in weather conditions that were not always favorable, such as light winds, and trying to stay as focused as possible. The talent and determination of the 18-year-old athlete from Oristano were once again key, Maddalena gained access to the Medal Series for which a victory would be enough for her to win the Formula Wing World Championship.
“When I crossed the finish line it was an immense joy, I ran to my father and thought that I had made it – comments Maddalena Spanu – it is a victory of everyone around me. I am so happy with this result, the emotion is hard to explain. It was a very hard-fought stage, there were so many of us and every mistake could cost us dearly because at the top we were all attached with the score. To win the world championship here in Cagliari, in such variable conditions was special. I want to thank those who supported me during this season, the support was crucial, especially in the most difficult moments.”
A good palmares at 18 years of age…
The Young Azzurra athlete adds the first title of an Absolute Formula Wing World Cup to her palmares, alongside the European WingFoil Racing Champion title she won last May. She currently sits at the top of the World Cup ranking, waiting to compete in the final leg scheduled for the first week of December in Brazil.
The other Italians
There was also another important medal for the “flying” Italians in Porto Cervo. That is, silver among men for Francesco Cappuzzo. Also of note was the fourth place for the other Italian in the race, Alessandro Jose Tomasi.
