Patrizio Bertelli in 2007 explained his philosophy on the America’s Cup

Luna Rossa exits the scene at the 2007 America’s Cup in Valencia. From the pages of the Giornale della Vela, Tuscan Patrizio Bertelli announces that he is not giving up, that he will try again. And he tells how his passion for the sea, sailing boats and racing came about. Provided… (taken from the Journal of Sailing issue 6, July 2007).

Patrizio Bertelli: “It’s all up and down.”

“As long as I’m not bored, I’ll continue.”

With these words Patrizio Bertelli announces that he will try again to storm the America’s Cup, as long as it remains a sporting event, not a circus:

“Circuits created around communication and marketing operations do not appeal to me. I am more interested in knowing how soon the Cup will be done again and with which boats….

It’s all up and down. When it goes wrong, I want to redo the Cup to do better the next time, and when it goes right, I feel like finding a way to win it.

There were moments of great happiness in the three campaigns we ran. In the first one, we won the Louis Vuitton Cup; in the second one, we had major problems with the boat, but by changing the bow twice during the course of the races, we gave a good demonstration of our organizational skills. In the latter we reached the final of the challengers and reconciled with the past….

In these ten years Luna Rossa has proselytized. We have never raced rowdy, and although the results have been mixed, our fans have always been positive.

Luna Rossa has been fundamental for the sailing movement in Italy: we have carried out our challenge continuously and, even if we are not the national team, we have given a great help to all Italian sailing. ”
