Offshore sailing, that of real sailors, is growing and attracting more and more owners and crews who are also looking for adventure in sailing and not just technical performance, which, by the way, is never lacking.
RAN 630, adventure in the Tyrrhenian Sea
In addition to an established classic such as the Rolex Middle Sea Race and the Aegean 600, the other regatta of at least 600 miles that is gaining increasing interest is the RAN 630, an acronym for Regata dell’Accademia Navale, while the number 630 indicates the miles of the Livorno – Porto Cervo – Faraglioni di Capri – Livorno course. To many, the name will remind them of TAN, the Naval Academy Trophy, which today has changed its name to Settimana Velica Internazionale Accademia Navale – Città di Livorno of which RAN 630 is an integral part. It is Italy’s longest regatta and was also created as a seafaring test for Naval Academy cadets, who participate each year with some of their boats.

RAN 630, what you need to know
The 2025 edition of the RAN 630 will start April 26 from Livorno and was presented in an elegant and yet unusual location for a regatta, the Milan showroom of Officine Gullo, the main sponsor of the event organized by the Livorno Yacht Club with the Naval Academy. “The RAN 630 is a regatta with an oceanic flavor that would have appealed to Admiral Straulino,” explained Professor Conti, president of the YCL. which takes sailors through extraordinary scenery such as the Faraglioni of Capri, the Emerald Coast and the Tuscan archipelago with two hundred miles of open sea where it is easy to find formed waves. For the Livorno Yacht Club, the ambition is to organize a regatta that welcomes both vintage and extreme boats with a special focus on double crews and those approaching the wider offshore for the first time “.
How to enroll
The RAN 630 is a valid race for the Italian Offshore Championship with coefficient 3, the highest. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and the Yacht Club Capri will, as always, take charge of checking competitors’ passages at their respective course gates. The final rankings will be calculated using the ORC and IRC fee systems for both full and double crews. The Milan presentation, which was well attended by owners and sailors including the winners of the last two editions Guido Baroni and Alessandro Miglietti, double-handed crew of the Sunfast 3600 Lunatika, was also attended by Tommaso Chieffi and ORC world president Bruno Finzi, who explained the potential introduced in the ORC rating system for a big offshore race like the RAN 630. The Notice of Race is online at https://ran630.it/ through which 15 boats have already registered, open to monohull and multihull boats over 9.5 meters in length, including solo boats. Thanks to the presence of the Navy, the fleet will be able to count on the monitoring of the entire regatta course by the Naval Squadron’s Command-in-Chief Operations Center, thus ensuring the best safety conditions for competitors. The Naval Academy Regatta – RAN 630 is supported by main sponsor Officine Gullo, Italian excellence in the production of high-end kitchens. Official timekeeper is Locman, an Italian watchmaker based on the island of Elba.
