This is where the party is! Where. At the Marina Cala de’ Medici for the VELA Cup Toscana Special Edition 50 GDV. A very special edition with 85 registered boats (many Mylius, which participated in the shipyard’s Rendez Vous ) and a big party to celebrate all together the 50th anniversary of the Giornale della Vela (founded in 1975).

The boats that took to the water battled to the last edge on a sea day that provided satisfaction for both cruisers in “family and friends” configuration and the purest racers. Several crews took advantage of the opportunity to have a free check-up of mast, rigging and lines carried out by the experts from the CD Sails sailmaker before the regatta, receiving valuable advice on optimizing equipment (state of rigging/rigging and lines/basic mast adjustment).

The weather provided near-perfect conditions: sunshine, increasing wind during the race and a sea that allowed everyone (even the less experienced) to enjoy the sailing. The latest weather update, with indications of the expected wind, was given just minutes before the start by Riccardo Ravagnan of Meteomed, the official weather partner of the VELA Cup, during the crew briefing. On the water everything was really seen: close-knit crews competing for victory, families discovering for the first time the thrill of a regatta, friends enjoying a day of sailing. The VELA Cup formula proves to be a winner: no stress, lots of fun and above all the chance to compete on equal terms thanks to the VELA Cup compensation system.

The story of the regatta

A few minutes after 11 a.m. the start of the VELA Cup Toscana was given, with a very challenging start that engaged the many boats on the starting line. Among them were all the Mylius registered for the shipyard’s Rendez Vous and several X-Yachts present for the gathering of theItalian X-Yacht Owners Association, but there was also the charge of the many Vauriens! For them, a separate “ad hoc” race course was set up in cooperation with theVaurien Association Italy to allow all boats to have fun and challenge each other in safety.

Let’s come to the regatta report. Those who started at the left buoy had an advantage in the first few minutes of the race over the rest of the fleet, managing to sail the first long side from Cala de’ Medici to Chioma in front of the Quercianella in the lead, despite the decreasing wind. On board there was a lot to struggle with: the race was characterized by technical and “challenging” moments for the tacticians due to the variations in the wind.

Once around the buoy to the shallows of Vada, there was an initial drop in wind followed by a gradual increase as the wind turned to the northwest. On the final side there was an increase in wind (up to 18 knots!) that enlivened the finishes, with the small boats catching up a lot in the straights of the finish line. First across the finish line was Twin Soul B, the Mylius 80 of Mylius Yachts shipyard president Luciano Gandini, with multi-time champion Torben Grael aboard.

Also the race course is always spectacular. And then I also met Torben Grael at the dock-I couldn’t believe it!”
