One month from now, exactly on the weekend of June 27-29, the VELA Cup will land in Sardinia for the Porto Rafael-Palau leg. The Marina of Porto Rafael will be the center of the circuit’s first summer regatta, which will take place on Saturday, June 28. An unmissable opportunity to come and discover (or rediscover) one of the most beautiful areas of Italy that the whole world envies us. Especially if you come there by boat!
Latin sails and Caprerini: we look forward to seeing you in Porto Rafael!
At the VELA Cup in Porto Rafael – Palau on Saturday, June 28, there are two more reasons why you can’t miss it: the Latin sails and the special ranking dedicated to Caprerini.
Solicited by Sara Pincioni, daughter of Ottavio Pincioni, founder of Porto Rafael Marina, and Alessandro Bifulco, secretary of the class (two institutions in Sardinia when it comes to Latin sails) we decided to welcome Latin sails to the VELA Cup in Porto Rafel – Palau. These magnificent boats will have a dedicated course, ranking and prizes: for the VELA Cup circuit it is an evocative first time, an “event within the event” to which all owners of a lateen sail are invited: also because the lateen sails will have free registration and mooring at the Marina of Porto Rafael.
Dear Caprerini, the VELA Cup party in Porto Rafael – Palau takes place right in front of theMaddalena Archipelago and is made just for you! The legendary Centro Velico Caprera has given their patronage to the VELA Cup at the end of June and there will be special prizes to the “Caprerini” who are aboard the best-ranked boats. On stage at the awards party the stars will also be you, the Caprera students! Just indicate to us during registration that Caprerini will be among your crew members.
The course of the VELA Cup in Porto Rafael
The Porto Rafael – Palau VELA Cup regatta kicks off from the charming and welcoming Marina of Porto Rafael, strategically located to explore theMaddalena Archipelago. It immediately leaves the coast pointing south, until it reaches the splendid Rada di Mezzo Schifo, which lies just west of the center of Palau and its famous gulf, a popular destination for sailing enthusiasts. From here, the route veers decisively north, with destination the west coast of the island of La Maddalena and, in particular, the scenic Cala Francese, an enchanting bay set between granite rocks and crystal clear waters. After passing this stretch, proceed west to circumnavigate the island of Spargi, one of the pearls of the Sardinian archipelago. Passing also the islet of Spargiotto, you veer south again, skirting Secca Corsara and Punta Coda Sardegna, until you return in front of the Marina di Porto Rafael.
The boats already registered for the VELA Cup in Porto Rafael – Palau
The crews that have already decided to participate in the VELA Cup in Porto Rafael – Palau are many, and the registered boats are diverse, among them are Classic Boat, modern boats, very fast racers and cruising boats. Here are some examples.

We start with the Classic Boat“Vèlite 2,” a 1975 Baltic 33, of which owner Nicola Filia says “I am the fourth owner. After careful reffitting the boat participated in the Baltic Rendezvous in 2023 finishing third in its category. The following year 8 place at Formenton and first at the Legionnaires ‘Regatta in the Classics. She then arrived Elegant boat 2024 at the Sailing Cup at the Sardinians’ Cala Marina. Launched in 1975 Velite 2 is hull No. 2 of 42. Based at Portisco Marina.”

Scrolling down the entry list we then find modern boats such as Mira, a Grand Soleil 52 LC from 2020 by owner Fortunato Unali, or Edoardo Bulgheroni‘sEryd 30“Feu Vert II,” a 9-meter from 2015, and boats “out of the chorus” such as the Rodman 42“Cheyenne” (the former boat of the King of Spain!).
The VELA Cup does not end at sea!
On Saturday afternoon, after the regatta, another Regatta begins, the one in…thekitchen! For those registered for the Porto Rafael – Palau VELA Cup, the “competition” continues ashore thanks to the historic Sardinian company Nieddittas , which will be a stage partner and will provide each VELA Cup crew with an ingredient to be enhanced within a dish: the typical black mussels. There will be a jury ready to taste – and evaluate – all the dishes of the crews participating in the challenge!

The winners of the Regatta in the Kitchen will be announced during the VELA Cup awards ceremony, where all the winners of the different classes are honored, as well as other crews who have earned podium finishes. But at the VELA Cup you also win just by participating, and the reason why is quickly said. Thanks to the VELA Cup partners, lots of prizes for all crews are raffled off during the awards ceremony. A few examples: a pair of blocks offered by Ubi Maior, a subscription to Meteomed’s Meteo Top service or Garmin’s Navionics Platinum+ nautical charts, a Leatherman multifunction, a Wellness Box with IBSA products, and lots of other prizes.

But the party at Porto Rafael Marina doesn’t end there! After the Regatta in the Kitchen and the big VELA Cup awards ceremony there will be music, food & beverage on the dock for all crews, and for the most daring…the party continues! The VELA Cup evening will be enlivened by the DJ set signed Aether Porto Rafael until late at night.
