Loro Piana Giraglia: war of nerves and no wind, Scallywag first in Genoa

From last year’s 35-knot Mistral to this year’s almost total lack of wind, the Loro Piana Giraglia is like that, and that is why it remains one of the most fascinating offshore races in the Mediterranean. It may not be the hardest or longest, but winning it is not trivial, and the more than 100 boats that are participating in the regatta these hours know it well.
And the maxi 100 Scallywag and Magic Carpet E, another 100′, are well aware of this, as they put on a fierce match race in the Gulf of Genoa, with Scallywag coming out on top only at the last mile, just 2 minutes ahead.
The two maxis took 32 hours to cover the 200-mile course (40 miles less than the original course, reduced due to low wind ed.), a very high time for these boats (the record is 14 hours). And of course with so little wind it is very hard even and especially for the smaller boats.

After the maxis, among the IRC and ORC boats the fight for the handicap ranking is more open than ever, although two fairly solid positions are emerging. For the IRC ranking, which awards the overall victory of the regatta, Gian Marco Magrini’s Ker 40 Vito 2 seems to be able to have serious chances to take first place, having already crossed the finish line in Genoa. The same goes for Luca Locatelli’s Swan 45 Thetis in ORC. Both of these boats have managed to make a major break on the water from their direct competitors, and seem to be the two most serious candidates for final victory as they await the approach of the smaller boats. Still very much open for the rankings in the various classes.
The ascent to Genoa will be with a breeze that is expected to blow from the northwest in the afternoon/evening today, but very locally variable.
