The first day of the TAG Heuer VELA Cup in Chiavari was held on May 7th. More than 60 boats lined up at the start and while a north wind made the beautiful course in the Gulf of Tigullio even more exciting.
A colourful fleet of over 60 boats invaded the Tigullio Gulf for the first day of the TAG Heuer VELA Cup in Chiavari, the inaugural leg of the TAG Heuer VELA Cup 2022 circuit organized by Giornale della Vela. Clouds and a few rain showers characterized the start of the regatta-sailing event, but at 11 a.m. the sky opened up and a gusty, irregular north wind began to blow, delighting the tacticians and putting all the crews to the test as the wind shifted from 5 to 20-25 knots. The race committee did an excellent job of positioning the race course despite the less than ideal conditions. The coastal course of the VELA Cup took in one of the most beautiful stretches of Liguria, starting and finishing off the coast of Chiavari.
Itacentodue wins in real time
The faster boats naturally took advantage of this and in about an hour and a half managed to finish the course. Real time victory went to Itacentodue, the Ice Yachts 61 skippered by Adriano Calvini, a wonderful boat that embodies the “cruiser-racer” spirit of the Vela Cup.
There was a spectacular presence within the fleet of many ICE Yachts taking part in the third edition of the ICE Cup. Among them was “Otra Vez”, the ICE 52 that recently dominated the regattas in Maltese waters, but also a large number of ICE 60s including “Joy”, “Venilia” and “Pura Follia”. There was also the very fast ICE 71 “Black Koala”, as well as the small but fierce ICE 33.

A great festival at Marina Calata Ovest
There was a lot of fun on the water, lots of families and enthusiastic crews and the presence of many journalists from the main Italian yachting magazines on board to record the emotions and moods of a truly spectacular day. The enthusiasm and desire to start racing again and experience the sea was palpable among all the participants, many of them foreigners from all over Europe. The reception at Marina Calata Ovest in Chiavari, which is hosting the event, was really warm for everyone.
The final rankings of the TAG Heuer VELA Cup Chiavari and the ICE Cup will be known after the official prize giving at 19.00hrs and the winners will be celebrated with many special prizes including the prestigious TAG Heuer Aquaracer watch which will go to the first on corrected time.
But the best thing is that for all the crews participating in the TAG Heuer VELA Cup in Chiavari tomorrow Sunday, May 8th, it will start again with trials, let’s say a tasty “rematch”, more prize-giving and more fun.
