Last VELA Cup of the year: all sailing in the Gulf of Spice

A must-see event on Saturday, September 17, for the TAG Heuer VELA Cup in La Spezia/Golfo dei Poeti. For the last leg of the famous regatta circuit organized by the Newspaper of Sailing, Ligurian waters are filled with sails.

The weekend is approaching and the docks at the Port of La Spezia are now beginning to be packed with boats. The atmosphere is one of celebration, and many crews are beginning to anticipate the many thrills to come on the water and ashore. In fact, the TAG Heuer VELA Cup in La Spezia/Golfo dei Poeti, the last leg of the famous regatta circuit organized by the Journal of Sailing, is organized for Saturday, Sept. 17. Already 90 crews have registered for the event.

To end this racing season on a high note, the last VELA Cup of this 2022 looks particularly rich. In fact, it takes place within the largest sailing festival in Liguria, namely the Golfo dei Poeti Cup. This event, which takes place in one of the most symbolic places in the history of sailing and seafaring in Italy, consists of a wide range of regattas and trophies dedicated to modern Orc-rigged boats, as well as cruising cabin cruisers and vintage hulls.

Gulf of the Poets: a unique “temple of sailing”
The setting for all is that of the Gulf of Poets, one of the most beautiful in the world according to Napoleon and the scene of sailing competitions since 1878 when on the occasion of the launching of the battleship Dandolo, in the presence of Queen Margherita, one of the very first sailing regattas held in Italy took place, won by Prince Giuseppe Ruspigliosi’s 14-meter Fanny.

Everyone loves sailing in the Gulf of Poets because it is sheltered, so the sea is always calm, and the wind is never lacking. And what is no small thing, it allows one to admire the islands of Tino and Palmaria as well as unique seaside villages such as Portovenere, Lerici and Le Grazie. Moreover, during the regatta the Gulf of Poets will be flown over by ultralight aircraft, aerobatic planes and Navy helicopters for a memorable spectacle.

Within this great event that is Golfo dei Poeti Cup the TAG Heuer VELA Cup brings as always its spirit of celebration, simplicity and sharing. It is in fact a regatta/sailing event open to all boats, of all sizes and shapes, with no age restrictions, competing without necessarily having to have a tonnage certificate. The Gulf of La Spezia Sailing Clubs Committee is on hand to provide all boats with a compensation system.

Those who do not have a boat can easily rent one to participate in the event, and there is no shortage of moorings in the area: from Porto Mirabello, to Porto Lotti, from Marina di Fezzano, to Marina di Portovenere, as well as the numerous piers of the Gulf’s main clubs.

Award ceremony with music and food festival on the ground
Once the TAG Heuer VELA Cup regatta in La Spezia/Golfo dei Poeti is completed, you can expect the prize-giving ceremony organized in an atmospheric outdoor space on the same evening of Saturday, Sept. 17, and accompanied by the Navy band. Many prizes for all participating crews: class winners, raffle prizes and special prizes. The award ceremony will be followed by a real “food festival” with delicacies and wine galore, musical performances and visits to the booths in the sailing village.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE SAILING CUP IN SPICE
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE – Any type of boat with no age limit, in the “Cruise” (white sails) and “Regatta” (with gennaker/spi, etc.) categories.
MOORINGS – Main marinas where you can moor: Porto Mirabello, Porto Lotti, Marina di Fezzano, Marina di Portovenere and piers of the main clubs in the Gulf.
DURATION AND ROUTE – Each of the “Regattas” lasts no more than 3-4 hours. The route
Is coastal.
THE EQUIPMENT – You don’t have to be an experienced sailor to participate; you don’t use the “rules of racing” but those of sailing.
PRIZES – Prizes are awarded to the first in each class in the “Cruise” and “Regatta” categories, the overall winner on corrected time, for all precious silk-screened plates. For the first real-time Speedy antifouling from Veneziani. Rich prizes raffled among all participants at the awards ceremony held that evening, up for grabs from Garmin are an InReach Mini 2 satellite receiver, an inflatable Sup from Vetus, waterproof gloves from Plastimo, multi-purpose knife from Letherman, and a magical roll-up sailor’s craft from Seably.
