It concluded in Porto Cervo the World ORC 2022, with a total of 7 evidence completed in all three regatta groupings, A, B and C. Sardinia offered varied and spectacular weather conditions, from light winds to a strong Sirocco in the offshore trial, with two days of proverbial Mistral that enhanced the trials between the buoys. The rankings of the three groupings leave a bitter taste in the mouths of the Italian boats, as none of the domestic teams managed to take first place in the overall standings.
GROUP A
In Group A, the ORC world champion is Kwok Karl’s Chinese-flagged Tp 52 Beau Geste and superstar crew with American Ken Read at the helm, New Zealander Gavin Brady as tactician and another Kiwi, Simon Daubney, two-time America’s Cup winner with Team New Zealand and Alinghi, as trimmer. Behind them are the Argentines of Fernando Chain’s Swan 45 From Now On. Closing out the podium is one of the surprises of the Worlds, Andrea Pietrolucci’s Mylius 14e55 Milu II, which is also the first Corinthian boat.
GROUP B
In Group B, Grand Soleil 44 Essentia of Romanian owner Catalin Tradafir repeated its 2021 success, withstanding a comeback by the Swan 42. Mela, by Andrea Rossi, finished second, third place for another Swan 42, Tuulberg Aivar’s Estonian Katarina II. The victory among the Corinthians went to Pier Vettor Grimani’s X-41 Sideracordis.
Estonian success in Group C as well, with the Italy Yachts 11.98 Sugar 3 literally dominating the series with an impressive score of five wins and one second place. A lot of Italy is also on board, however, with Sandro Montefusco at the helm, boat designer Matteo Polli at the mainsail, Maurizio Loberto as navigator, Paolo Bucciarelli as trimmer and Simone Ferrarese as tactician. The podium in Group C is all Italia Yachts 11.98, with second place going to Enzo De Blasio’s Scugnizza and third to Stefano Rusconi’s To Be. The Corinthian victory went to Corrado Annis’ Italia Yachts 998 Lady Day, sealing total domination by the Italian shipyard.
