The catamaran market has long been over 90 percent occupied by cruisers; however, there are variations on the theme, bringing a touch of variety and, why not, sportiness to this sector as well. Today we present 3 catamarans that we like to describe as “out of the chorus,” that is, not set on the classic cruiser-charter catamaran pattern, but designed to have performance and sailing fun while maintaining those comfort requirements that appeal to the catamaran crowd.
Cure 55
Coming from Australia is this catamaran (17.78 x 8.69 m) built of carbon and designed by Paul Bury and the Cure Design Team. It is characterized by sharp bows and a rather gritty overall aesthetic. Although the netting typical of sportier catamarans has been retained at the bow, a small sunbathing area also finds its place in front of the deckhouse. Luxurious interiors offer a variety of layout options for this catamaran whose primary goal, however, is to return exhilarating sailing performance to its guests.
Far East 42C
The Far East 42 C (12.55 x 6.80) is actually the second cat produced by the Chinese shipyard, but the first, the 36C, followed more of a sport boat philosophy. The 42 C was unveiled at the Shanghai boat show, the design is by Simonis Voogd Design , which also designed the yard’s monohulls. Somewhat surprisingly, the Far East 42C is a true cruising cat. It therefore departs from the tradition of the shipyard, which until now had never produced cruisers, and decides to do so by entering the world of catamarans. This is confirmed by the fly bridge, and the proposed version explicitly dedicated to charter.
Seawind 1170
Coming again from Australia is this catamaran that this time takes us into a dimension exquisitely related to owner cruising, the Seawind 1170 (11.90 x 6.50 m). The boat features a generously sized deckhouse on which large windows have been installed, two of which, the central ones, can be opened to increase interior ventilation.
The boat is equipped with two stays, one for the self-tacking jib, the second for a more generously sized headsail, a sort of Tails/Genoa. Comfortable and travel-friendly interior.
