To see two words like Wally and rocket joined together on the same line would make any sailing and racing enthusiast jump in his chair. Wally, a world leader in yachting innovation and two-time winner of the ADI Compasso d’Oro, wanted to try its hand at an ambitious project and create its first pure racing model. The name is most apt: rocket, rocket.
Wallyrocket51
Born out of a determination to create the fastest racing boat in the world in corrected time, wallyrocket51 is the child of a long history of innovation and meticulous attention to detail, supported by the skills developed in the America’s Cup by the Botin Partners studio, which signed the lines together with an exceptional pool: Vasco Vascotto and Guillermo Parada. The hull coloring is really aggressive, starting with the choice of a matte finish with fluorescent yellow details, with a decidedly racing flavor. The launch, as usual, took place in Monaco, home of the shipyard created by Luca Bassani in 1994.
The Project
The team chose to build a 51-foot long hull, which in racing means earning a rating bonus expendable in other elements. Specifically, the use of an adjustable trim tab on the trailing edge of the keel blade eliminates drift, allows the boat to point higher, reduce drag and travel as little water as possible to the buoy.
Wallyrocket51 – The Technique
The length of rocket51 is 15.5 meters and its weight stops at just 6.3 tons. All of this is possible thanks to the lightweight lay-up layered with carbon foam, but it is also thanks to the High Modulus spars and AeroSix rigging also made of carbon: as you can tell, everything on board is pulled to the max. Wallyrocket51 is designed to be steered by a crew reduced to 11 members, who can maneuver on a twin rudder wheels shifted toward the middle of the boat (ah, weight distribution…) and on 6 winches, three on each side. The sail area of this Wally? 167 sq. m., which soars to 363 sq. m. at load-bearing gaits thanks to the change of headsails.
