Rolex Middle Sea Race: Scallywag first in Malta, Red Bandit in hunt for IRC win

The first boat to cross the finish line of the Rolex Middle Sea Race in Malta was Scallywag 100 (HKG), with a time of two days, 21 hours, 33 minutes and 29 seconds. Scallywag was about 20 minutes ahead of Black Jack 100 at the end of a head-to-head race that lasted throughout the race.

The owner of the boat, which flies the Hong Kong flag, is Seng Huang Lee. It is a Dovell 100, designed by Andrew Dovell, formerly Ragamuffin 100. The construction, in carbon, is by Cookson, and the boat was launched in 2005. The current owner has owned her since 2016. Aboard Scallywag have raced David Witt (skipper), Alex Higby, Andrew Hay, Ben Piggott, Bram van Spengen, Craig Garnett, David Mann, Dominic Davies, Francis O’Leary, George Richardson, James Crampton, Juan Vila, Logan Radford, Matt Stenta, Nicholas Crones, Pete Cumming, Phil Harmer, Ryan Ewings, Trystan Seal.

As we anticipated in the previous news, the middle part of the fleet was delayed for a long time in a windless area between Palermo and San Vito Lo Capo.
The maxis and another group of boats shortly after, which includes the Tp 52 Bandit, were able to cross this area much faster and this will greatly affect the IRC overall ranking that awards the overall Middle Sea Race victory. At the moment precisely Red Bandit, which recently rounded Lampedusa, is the boat that could be aiming for first place overall, along with Teasing Machine, the 52-footer that is in very close proximity on Red Bandit’s stern. The outcome of the standings remains uncertain, the group of medium-sized boats is approaching Favignana in these hours but it appears difficult for them to make a comeback in the overall standings.
