It is “dense,” for 2025, the sports calendar of the Yacht Club Italiano, the oldest sailing club in the country and one of the oldest in the Mediterranean (it was founded in Genoa in 1879).
All the regattas of the Italian Yacht Club
A nice mix of racing between the buoys, great offshore classics (such as the Loro Piana Giraglia), sailing, and events dedicated to dinghies and maxi yachts. Here it is.
January – March – Genoa protagonist
Club commitments begin with the 3 winter weekends dedicated to theInternational Genoa Winter Contest. The first two (31/1 – 8/2) reserved for Optimist and ILCA 4/6/7; the third and last (March 15/16) for monotypes H22, J/24, J/80 and 5.5m S.I. An excellent opportunity to make the most of the winter conditions of the Gulf of Genoa, often affected by sustained north winds and flat seas. Also in March, March 28-30 is the turn of the fifth edition of Genoa Sailing Week, which traces its origins to the first regattas organized by the Club. In addition to the ORC and IRC Classes scheduled in previous editions, GSW is also open to J/70s.
April – Regattas in Tigullio and beyond
April 5-6 will be the weekend dedicated to The Gentlemen Challenge, a regatta in collaboration with the Casino Society and reserved by invitation for UCI(Union of Italian Circles) member clubs aboard J/70 social monotypes. On the 12th and 13th, it will be the turn of the Porto Carlo Riva Trophy, with the boats engaged on the Genoa, Rapallo, Genoa route divided into two moments with the Saturday evening when the crews will be hosted in the new Rapallo Marina. From the 25th to the 27th, the Spring Regattas in Portofino. The village of Portofino and the Yacht Club Italiano are once again inaugurating the 2025 sporting season for large yachts with the return of the Spring Regattas. Also for this edition, alongside the YCI are partners Belmond and Banca Passadore. The regattas will be open to all yachts over 50′, with the successful invitation-only formula.
May – Between Dinghy and “long”
Among the confirmations for 2025 is the Gallinara Regatta – Chapel Trophy, May 17-18. A particularly heartfelt event by the YCI and in collaboration with the Alassio CNAM on the Genoa-Alassio-Genoa route. The month of May is also the month of the Dinghy 12′, which returns with one of the Club‘s most cherished regattas, the Bombola d’Oro – Siad Trophy, again with Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino as a natural backdrop and which has now become a classic for the Dinghy 12′ Class. The small dinghies will be on the water May 23-25 in the two categories VTR and Classic to win the coveted trophy, which in 2025 is now in its 28th edition.
June – It’s Giraglia show!
The Loro Piana Giraglia, the super classic that in 2025 consolidates its relationship with the French town and title partner Loro Piana. For this edition: expansion of the new race village in Saint-Tropez, which will open its doors on Friday, June 6, with four days of inshore races in the waters of Saint-Tropez (June 7,8,9,10) and culminating with the offshore start on Wednesday, June 11 on the classic 241-mile Saint-Tropez – Giraglia – Genoa triangle. The Loro Piana Giraglia week ends with the awards ceremony scheduled for Saturday, June 14 at the club‘s headquarters. In Saint-Tropez, the new village-which will have an even more innovative layout for 2025-will welcome the racers and become the center of social activities on race days.
September – Millevele
Saturday, September 20, is the day of the IREN Millevele, the Genoa sailing event that is attracting increasing interest and successful participation and is an integrated event among the major events of the International Boat Show.
October – All out fishing!
The last sporting month then closes the season on a high note with the Lowrance Fishing Tournament, an event dedicated to sport fishing on October 4/5 now in its 4th edition with an ever increasing number of participants. On Oct. 11 and 12 it will be time for the Social Regatta aboard the club ‘s fleet of J/70s (nearly 20 Member crews participated in 2024) and then the curtain will be drawn on activities at sea with the 61st edition of the Poggi Cup, the event reserved for dinghies on Oct. 25-26.
Yacht Club Italiano, not just regattas and sporting events
The evening presentation of the YCI sports calendar in Milan, at Palazzo Serbelloni, was an opportunity to highlight the Club‘s activities related to the promotion of sports among young people, the achievements of Members on race courses around the world, and the commitment to charitable, solidarity and environmental protection activities. During the presentation, a number of awards were given for the important support given to the Club, in particular, to Stefan Mรผller, General Manager of Rolex Italy for supporting the development of youth activities, Edoardo Garrone – President of Gaslininsieme Foundation who with Nautor Swan CEO Giovanni Pomati, contributed to the ClubSwan36 YCI campaign that allowed an important fundraising for the refurbishment of the beach of the Genoese Children’s Hospital. Lastly, also on stage was Pigi Loro Piana, who led the company whose vice president he is to become title partner of the Giraglia, which became Loro Piana Giraglia last year.
