Giorgio Brezich, former Snipe champion, President and Commodore of the Trieste Sailing Society and a great reference point for sailing and seafaring enthusiasts, passed away.
The sailing world in Trieste and beyond is mourning the passing of Giorgio Brezich, a beloved and historical figure. The Trieste Sailing Society, of which he was president and Commodore and with which he shared a lifetime of passion for the sea, remembered him with a touching message, “Our Commodore has sailed to another sea.” A dedication that encapsulates all the affection and esteem that the sailing community had for him.
Who was Giorgio Brezich
Born and raised in Trieste, Giorgio Brezich had taken up sailing at an early age. By the time he was only 6 years old, he was already bowman on snipes, using his lightness to flank experienced helmsmen. But his first real baptism at the helm came with the Olympic Jole “Luisella,” which marked the beginning of an extraordinary career.
Lots of satisfaction in the Snipe class
In the following years Brezich found in the Snipe class the category that allowed him to showcase his great talent. He made his debut on the Triestina della Vela boat “Quarner,” but the real turning point came in 1957, when he won his first junior Italian title in Riva del Garda paired with Franco Ostoich. The two competed on the “Bon II,” showing great fellowship and taking the top step of the podium.
As a sailor Giorgio won 3 Italian junior titles and 9 Italian overall titles. He also served as Italian National Secretary from 1988 to 1995 and spent many years on the Board of Governors of the international Scira, with a term as Commodore in 1996. He was Chairman of the Rules Committee for nearly two decades and helped make the rules of marksmanship clearer and more uniform.
A master for so many generations of sailors
In addition to his successes on the race courses, Brezich was a true reference point for entire generations of sailors. His experience, charisma, and willingness to share knowledge made him a true teacher to all those who had the privilege of crossing his path. He was not only a champion on the race course, but also a man who embodied the true values of seamanship: respect, passion and dedication.
Over the years, his commitment to Triestina della Vela has been tireless. His role as Commodore has seen him always in the forefront of organizing events, regattas and promoting sailing culture in Trieste. His ability to pass on a love of sailing helped foster numerous young talents, many of whom today recognize his indelible impact on their sporting careers.
