Bayesian, formerly Salute, is the 56-meter Perini that sank Monday night off Porticello (Palermo)
The complex salvage operation of the maxi yacht “Bayesian” that sank last August in Palermo will begin in early May. The area will remain closed to navigation for about a month.

Here we go. Recovery operations will begin in early May to salvage the wreck of the “Bayesian,” the maxi yacht Perini wrecked on Aug. 19, 2024, in the harbor roadstead of Porticello, Palermo, on a seabed of about 50 meters.

To unearth the maxi yacht, salvage companies expect about 20-25 days of diving by specialized personnel who will follow a specific procedure. First, before the ship is raised, the mast will be cut down for safety reasons. Once the ship and mast are brought back to the surface, they will be placed at the disposal of the Judicial Authority, in special areas identified in consultation with the Port System Authority of Western Sicily.

Floating cranes and anti-pollution systems

Work at the “Bayesian” will be conducted by special floating crane for heavy lifting. The first work vehicles are scheduled to arrive in the operations area on May 3.

Throughout the duration of the operations, again by the contractors, vehicles with anti-pollution capabilities and equipment will be deployed on site to be used in case of emergency, with the additional use of a drone equipped with sensors for the detection of pollutant traces, as well as a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), i.e., a remotely operated underwater vehicle.

Area banned for a radius of 650 m

The operations will be carried out under the continuous control of personnel of the Palermo Harbor Master’s Office and the vigilance of Coast Guard vessels with the contribution of the Police Forces (Guardia di Finanza and Carabinieri) in order to comply with the Ordinance of interdiction of the area issued by the Porticello Coast Guard. The same Ordinance provides for a ban on all maritime activities (navigation, anchoring, etc.) within a 650-meter radius from the point of the shipwreck, which is necessary to ensure the safe conduct of recovery operations.

For environmental monitoring, personnel from the Coast Guard’s underwater units will be employed throughout the entire period of operation, who in cooperation with ARPA personnel will also conduct periodic sampling of the surrounding body of water.

In order to also ensure the flight safety of the drone used for environmental monitoring, at the request of the Coast Guard, it was banned by Enac from flying in the airspace with a radius of 1 mile from the point of the shipwreck.

The Coast Guard recommends that all mariners respect the above-mentioned interdiction limits in order to safely carry out the complex and delicate work that will be performed on the “Bayesian.”
