Maxis put on a show in Sorrento, 30 of the world’s most beautiful boats to play for the European

What a battle among maxis in Sorrento waters for the Inshore program of the European Maxi, a review that opened with the Regatta of the Three Gulfs and which proceeds these days with the coastal trials and between the buoys. As many as 30 maxis are in fact doing battle in the waters of Campania, for a gathering of big boats that with these levels and numbers has not been seen in a long time.

European Maxi – How it’s going

In Sorrento waters, the maxis completed two more inshore races, in general conditions of light winds never exceeding 12 knots for the 17-mile one, and a 29-mile one in more intense air. On the leaderboard, there was an almost unchallenged domination of the maxi 72s, which, after seeing their activity as a class fade, have excellently recycled themselves as winning boats for comp regattas.

Leading the provisional standings after 3 races, counting the Three Gulfs, is American Hap Fauth’s Bella Mente, which scores 1-3-1 and leads by only one point over another maxi 72, Peter Harrison’s Jolt. Third place again for a 72, George Sakellaris’ Proteus.

An uphill start for Pigi Loro Piana’s Club Swan 80 My Song, which scores a 9-16 and a retirement in the third race, and fares little better for the new maxi 80 Capricorn, which instead retired from the long race and stumbled to a less-than-stellar 7-1 in the first two coastal races. Among the Italian boats, Andrea Recordati’s Wally 93 Bullitt, currently in the top 10, performed well.
