The year 2025, marked the 50th birthday of the Sailing Newspaper and, with that, the Classic Boat Club, the community dedicated to Classic Boats and all enthusiasts, new, as well as of ‘old’ date… It is a place dedicated to the celebration and preservation of the beautiful boats of the Golden Age of Sailing, the Classic Boats, and among its components, we find several ‘tools’ aimed precisely at this purpose. Among them, the Archive of Historic Classic Boats, a huge registry of excellent designs built over the years. This aims to contain and narrate hundreds and hundreds of hulls, presenting their history, images, data and market values, including those enhanced by certified historicity. Obviously, however, this is an archive that is constantly being updated. So here are 5 new Classic Boats to join the over 300 already surveyed!

Historic Classic Boat Archives: 5 new cult hulls arrive (10-14 m)

Let’s start with a premise: these 5 will not be the only new boats to be added in this 2025. And every suggestion, is always welcome. But we thought we would introduce this new phase with 5 little goodies. So here are two Baltic, two Swan and one Dufour ready to expand the ranks of the already very rich Archive of Historic Classic Boats.

Baltic 33

BALTIC 33

specs: Baltic Yachts; 10.02 x 3.21 m; 1975-1980 (#42); Cuthbertson & Cassian

Born in 1975, Cuthbertson & Cassian, the Baltic 33 is the ‘compact’ answer to the earlier Baltic 46, the yard’s first hull and, for the times, decidedly oversize. In response to an audience projected onto smaller segments, the yard thus launched this small 10.02-meter, a gem worth no less than 42 examples in just five years. Designed to be an agile, high-performance hull-thanks to its moderate displacement (4455 kg)-it responded well to this requirement, proving to be a good cruiser-racer even in medium and low winds. A gem of the North.

SWAN 40 (S&S)

specs: Nautor Swan; 11.98 x 3.30 m; 1970-1972 (#51); Sparkman & Stephens

Born in 1970 from the pencil of Sparkman & Stephens, the Swan 40 is one of the most iconic cruisers of the early Nautor season. Project No. 2025 by the New York firm, she is distinguished by her sleek lines, with a starboard bow, recessed mirrored stern and rudder on skeg, in the tradition of the time. The hull is a masthead sloop with a fixed keel or optional centerboard, perfect for solid yet performance cruising. A cult among classic Swans, she is now one of the most sought-after models by purists of the era.

SWAN 40 (F)

specs: Nautor Swan; 12.27 x 3.94 m; 1992-2001 (#58); German Frers

Born in 1992, signed Frers, the Swan 40 (F) is first of all to be confused with the previous 40, from 1970, signed S&S, however. Profoundly different, longer, the Argentine’s 40 is a hull that takes up the segment on Pekka Koskenkyla’s idea and, fundamentally, immediately turns out to be a masterpiece worth no less than 58 examples. Its longevity is thanks to a very elegant line: low freeboard, a very balanced retractable deckhouse, pronounced rakes and a stern with a strong negative slope-with Frers’ magic touch, the rounded chamfer at the hull/ deck connection. She becomes a cult favorite, and not just for elegance….

DUFOUR 41 CLASSIC

specs: Dufour; 12.30 x 3.98 m; 1995; J&J

Aimed at deep-sea cruising, in 1995 Dufour launched its new J&J signature creature, a comfortable and seaworthy 12.30-meter, available in both long chiclia and shallow draft versions. Kept in production until 2001, she is one of the yard’s most popular hulls at the end of the decade, known both for her good performance in light winds and for her large, well-maintained and comfortable interior volumes. A premium version, the ‘Grand Cruising’, was also later made, equipped with an even better interior and dedicated to long stays on board.

BALTIC 47

specs: Baltic Yachts; 14.55 x 4.40 m; 1994-2001 (#9); Judel/Vrolijk

Born from the Judel/Vrolijk signature, the Baltic 47 perfectly represents Baltic Yachts’ construction philosophy: a light-to-medium displacement hull designed to deliver brilliant performance but with pure cruising handling. Sandwich construction, reinforced with special unidirectional fibers, ensures structural rigidity, long-term reliability and surprising lightness for the size. What made the design truly unique was the very high level of customization offered: interiors, deck, laminates and appendages were all molded to the owner’s needs, whether he or she was looking for a shallow draft for inland cruising or aiming for a more pushed version with high-performance bulbs and weight optimization. A rare treat.
