If good mornings are any indication. Marco Ferrari, of the Vela Club of Campione del Garda, wins the Pre-World Championship of the Contender trapeze dinghy class, held July 25-27 at the Fraglia Vela in Malcesine with a fleet of as many as 112 boats.

On the lower steps of the podium, and that says a lot, go Australian Mark Bulka, a three-time world champion, and German Max Billerbeck, a gold medalist at the 2019 World Championships.
Ferrari’s victory is particularly significant for two reasons. Because it was achieved in wind conditions that were totally different from one day to the next: from Friday’s becalmed (which forced crews ashore), to Saturday’s weak Hour, to Sunday’s Peler that touched thirty knots, putting even the most experienced contenders to the test.
World Championship with 170 boats!
But above all, because tomorrow, July 30, the World Championship races will begin in which 170 boats from twelve countries and three continents will participate: this is the rainbow championship with the most entries since the 2013 Gravedona championship in which 174 boats participated.
Defending the Italian colors will be 43 crews including, in addition to Marco Ferrari, Antonio Lambertini, world champion in 2012, and Paolo Mascino, former 470 national team member. There will also be Andrea Bonezzi, no less than seven rainbow titles, who, however, will race with Australian sailing number. Finally, of note is the presence of Egidio Babbi, a two-time A-Class world champion and now the new addition, and already a landmark, of the legendary boat designed by Ben Lexcen, the father of Australia II.
