One month to go before the first leg of the sailing regatta/festival, the VELA Cup, Friday, May 2 to Sunday, May 4 (regatta and party Saturday, May 3) in Liguria, Chiavari. And it pays to be there if you are passionate about sailing and the sea. You are all invited, with any boat and crew. Good, not so good, newbies.

Interest is high, fun is guaranteed. In fact, more than forty boats have already registered, a record, with more than three hundred enthusiasts who will enliven the Ligurian leg that opens the summer season, at the end of the long Easter and May 1 bridge.

Where and what happens

The VELA Cup early season is in Chiavari in the heart of the Gulf of Tigullio, just a few miles from Genoa and Spezia, guests of the Marina di Chiavari Calata Ovest, which is offering free mooring for the night of Saturday, May 3, and, if you want to take advantage of the bridge, additional nights are at a discounted rate for VELA Cup participants.

The VELA Cup celebration on sea and ashore begins on Friday afternoon, May 2, when the VELA Cup Point opens where registration is finalized (you can register until Saturday morning before the race), the rich Gift Bag, bow sticker numbers, and race instructions are handed out. Then Saturday, May 3, comes the good stuff. At 9 a.m. on the dock at Marina Calata Ovest there is a briefing for the crews with weather forecasts from Meteomed. From 11 a.m. everyone is at sea for the regatta along the coastal course.

THE 12-MILE ROUTE Starts in front of the Marina di Chiavari Calata Ovest, then buoys at Lavagna, off Chiavari and Portofino, and finally back to the start/finish line. The race takes about 4 hours.

Then, after the race, which lasts no more than 4 hours, it’s back to the dock, relaxing and tidying up the boat, waiting for the dock party. From about 6:30 p.m. we start with the awards ceremony, where “almost everyone” wins either by merit (they did well in the standings) or by luck (rich raffle prizes). Delivered the last prize we all gather together, crews and friends, for the VELA Cup cocktail with music, food&beverage. Evening falls…free everyone!

The secret to the success of the VELA Cup

Why is the VELA Cup the most crowded sailing circuit in Italy and worth participating in the first leg in Chiavari/West Calata Marina?

Simple, because everyone can participate, without bureaucracy and complications. We take care of everything, whatever boat participates. And we make you a promise we at VELA Cup, you’ll have fun with your crew and make your boat happy too.
And if you have no crew? We’ll take care of it with our new “looking for/off boarding” service.

What boats will you find at the VELA Cup in Chiavari/Liguria?

We said, with one month to go before the May 3 date, when the Chiavari/Liguria VELA CUP sea and land party will take place, there are already more than 40 boats registered.

The smallest boat

Avalon – Barberis Tequila – 7.20 m

The smallest is the legendary Avalon, a newly refurbished 7.20-meter Sangria from 1972 that will compete with the other Tequila Bella del Sole, candidates for the award in the “Classic Boat” category (boats built from 1969 to 2000). The largest boat, on the other hand, is a prestigious 24-meter.

From top racing

Spirit of Nerina – Swan 42 OD – 12.8 m

Particularly crowded is the 10/13-meter category with over 20 boats already entered, in the “Cruising Boat” (white sails) and “Sport Boat” (spi/gennaker/Code 0) categories. Here there is something for every taste and performance: from the award-winning Spirit of Nerina (Swan 42) to the prestigious Xilla, an X -Yachts X 43 from 2023.

Prestigious and high-performance

Xilla – X-Yachts 43 – 13.24 m

Classic

There is no shortage of real goodies, such as Half Moon (photo below) 1982 John Alden 51 Ketch made by the Portius shipyard.

Half Moon – Ketch John Alden 51 – 16 m

The palm of the oldest boat participating in the Chiavari VELA Cup goes, for now, to TRICKY, Bianchi&Cecchi’s glorious BC4. Those already vying to win the “Elegant” prize are Gared, a Saffier SE 27, and Grazia, a Tofinou 12.

Elegant

Grace – Tofinou 12 – Latitude 46 – 11.99 m

Among the comments of those who have already signed up, listen to what they write here, “We are worse than the Brancaleone Army , but I do not exclude participation in the Sardinia leg as well,” or on the opposite “We want to play it out among the Sport Boats, we have new sails and fierce crew.”

This is the spirit of the VELA Cup where there is credit for every type of boat: racing, cruising, old or newly launched, experienced or novice crew. And above all, there is a ranking for everyone.
