Rain of prizes at the VELA Cup. And (almost) everyone wins

Participating in VELA Cups is great, but it’s even better to win them! Fortunately, at Italy’s most beautiful and fun racing circuit, almost all crews are rewarded! You don’t just win for the best performance at sea, but also for just participating, thanks to the valuable raffle prizes offered by our partners.

And then there is the Gift Bag, which is offered to each boat, which is a kind of wonder bag with useful and really unique gadgets, and the legendary VELA Cup T-shirt.

Rankings and Awards

Boats are divided into groupings by length (from “up to 7.5 meters” to “over 19 meters”) within the two categories“Cruising Boat” (white sails, excluding Code 0) and“Sport Boat” (Code 0, spi, gennaker, etc.). Special ranking for “vintage” boats at least 25 years old: the“Classic Boats“. From 2025 the rankings are drawn up with a new compensation system (VELA Cup secret handicap system) to balance the performance of each boat as much as possible.

Let’s take an example: an old Moody 42 in this way could keep up and beat a state-of-the-art Swan 78. And vice versa, it is the spirit of the VELA Cup. The system is balanced; everyone is on a level playing field.

At each stage, prizes are awarded to the top three finishers in each grouping (divided by length) in the two categories “Cruising Boat” and “Sport Boat” and the first place in the “Classic Boat” class.

For each stage, the first Classic Boat among boats that are at least 25 years old, regardless of category, is then awarded.

The Elegant Boat award is given to the most beautiful and elegant boat in each stage, regardless of the result obtained on the race course.

Finally, the overall winner in compensated time, identified through our secret formula, that is, the boat with the best performance, regardless of size, is awarded the Leg Winner prize.
