With the arrival of the last boat at the finish line in Punta Ala, the 2025 edition of the 151 Miglia – Cetilar Trophy, a yearlong offshore race that started Friday afternoon from Livorno, officially ended this morning, with as many as 190 boats participating.
A path that appeals to everyone
An edition made fascinating by the new route that took the fleet on a tour among the enchanting islands of the Tuscan Archipelago that, as per tradition, are used as buoys. A course that exceeded expectations, garnering wide acclaim among the participants. Among them was the skipper of the Maxi Arca SGR, Furio Benussi, who after crossing the finish line first in Punta Ala praised the new course, calling it more tactically challenging than the traditional one. The winner Arca SGR is a boat with a peculiar history; built in Australia in 2003 to race at the Rolex Sidney-Hobart, she was first spotted in Europe at the 2005 Barcolana, when Benussi chartered her for the occasion. From then on, its trail was lost until it was found half-destroyed in Menorca after going overboard. In 2019, the BoReAS (Boat Recycle in Action for Sailing Project), with Arca Fondi SGR as main sponsor, aims to put the boat back in the water, minimizing the environmental impact associated with building from scratch a boat with the same technical and performance characteristics: since then the boat has been reborn with the name Arca SGR.
With high pressure, tactics and technique make a difference
According to the crew of the Rodman 42 Cheyenne, tactics were crucial to excel in a race like this one, invested by high pressure and therefore very technical. Another important aspect emphasized by Cheyenne, is the ability on the part of the crews to have been able to read and interpret the thermal breezes: “we chose to come ashore close to the islands, precisely to try to make the most of the transitions of the breezes and this paid off compared to those who chose to go offshore.” During the race, becalmed phases alternated with phases of light winds, a condition that benefited the lighter boats, which were faster in the restart phases and always made up water compared to the larger boats. The final upwind, as predicted, engaged the boats with gusts reaching 20 knots.
