The VELA Cup summer never ends in Sardinia: after the Porto Rafael leg, from August 20 to 22 the busiest circuit in Italy returns to the island, specifically to Marina Cala dei Sardi in the heart of Gallura, northeastern Sardinia. Here are what the details of the weekend are and why you really can’t miss (all the more so if you are on vacation in the area!) the VELA Cup in Cala dei Sardi, organized by the Yacht Club Cala dei Sardi in collaboration with the Giornale della Vela.

The regatta for all in the dream places

The VELA Cup formula, also for the Cala dei Sardi stage, is designed to involve all types of boats and crews, from small cabin cruisers to large catamarans, with no limits of age or experience. No tonnage certificates or special memberships are required: the desire to sail and have fun is enough. The regatta takes place on a breathtaking course of about ten miles between Porto Rotondo, the Gulf of Cugnana, the islands of Soffi and the circumnavigation of Mortorio, finishing in front of the greenest marina in the Mediterranean: the Marina of Cala dei Sardi.

On the sea, it is “fought” on equal terms: all crews can decide whether to register in the Sport Boat category (thus using Code 0, Spinnaker, Gennaker…) or Crusing Boat (with white sails: only mainsail and jib). Then the boats are subdivided and merged into homogeneous classes, and finally the final standings are drawn up using the VELA Cup secret fee formula.

In addition, there is a special ranking for Classic Boats (boats at least 25 years old). All crews also receive a rich gift bag with gadgets from all circuit partners and the exclusive and official VELA Cup T-shirt. Category winners, the most elegant boat and even the last boat are awarded during the final party-award ceremony!

Program: sports, music and conviviality

The event opens on Wednesday, August 20, with the arrival of the first boats and the finalization of registration at the VELA Cup Point. The actual regatta takes place on Thursday, August 21, followed by an evening of festivities on the marina lawn with aperitifs, live music and prize giving. In keeping with VELA Cup tradition, almost everyone wins something: raffle prizes offered by partners, special awards and a lot of desire to share a passion for the sea.
