From August 20 to 22, Cala dei Sardi turns into the most inclusive and spectacular sailing stage of the summer. The VELA Cup, the event organized by the Yacht Club Cala dei Sardi in collaboration with the Giornale della Vela, returns to northern Sardinia and is the perfect opportunity to get out on the water, have fun and experience a unique event in one of the most fascinating places in the Mediterranean. We’ll explain why right now.
Are you on vacation in Sardinia? You can’t miss it!

If you’re vacationing in Sardinia this summer with your boat, the VELA Cup in Cala dei Sardi is an event you can’t miss. It combines the fun of racing on Italy’s most attended circuit with the scenic magic of the Gulf of Cugnana, including crystal-clear waters, sandy seabed and unparalleled hospitality. Here every crew finds the perfect atmosphere to share their passion for the sea, relax after the competition and enjoy a great party under the stars. What’s more, for all registered boats coming from outside the area, there are two nights of free mooring (subject to availability).
And if you still haven ‘t chosen where to go on vacation, what better opportunity than to choose right Cala dei Sardi on the occasion of the VELA Cup? Unspoiled nature, quality services and the unique opportunity to participate in a regatta open to all, immersed in the energy and beauty of the Costa Smeralda. With only 8 miles of relaxed sailing you reach Porto Palma, the cove south ofCaprera Island and enter the magnificence of La Maddalena. Not far from here, another destination not to be missed among the many that the archipelago offers, isSpargi Island: among the many magnificent and wild bays it hosts not to be missed is a dip in the crystal-clear waters of Cala Granara for a regenerating swim.
Why participate
- The “most democratic” regatta in sailing. ALL boats can participate, of all sizes, ages and rigs: cabin cruisers, dinghies, catamarans, lateen sails and even Classic Boats (at least 25 years old). Everyone wins, even those who have never raced before!
- Zero bureaucracy. No need for a rating certificate, racing experience or FIV membership. Registration is simple and straightforward: all you need is the desire to sail.
- Two tailor-made categories. Sign up as Sport Boat (for those who want to push with spinnaker, gennaker…) or Cruising Boat (mainsail and jib/genoa only, for those in small crew or “family & friends” formation).
- Free registration and special ranking for Classic Boats. If you have a boat over 25 years old, you can register for the VELA Cup for free if you are a Classic Boat Club member. In addition to free membership in ALL VELA cups, you have lots of other benefits.
- Secret compensation formula. Everyone competes on equal terms, whatever the boat-and even the smallest can surprise!
- Route among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. About 10 miles between Porto Rotondo, Gulf of Cugnana, Soffi Islands and the circumnavigation of Mortorio. You will sail through turquoise waters and breathtaking views.
- Level of hospitality. Free berth (for two nights subject to availability) in the Cala dei Sardi Marina, the greenest marina in the Mediterranean for all registered boats.
- Rich prizes and gadgets. Each crew receives a gift bag with official VELA Cup T-shirt and exclusive gadgets from VELA Cup partners.
- Grand prize giving. After the regatta, aperitif, and lots of prizes for the first in class, the most elegant boat, and the last boat, as well as lots of raffle prizes.
- Live music and party. On the lawn of the Marina Cala dei Sardi, after the VELA Cup awards ceremony, the party gets wild: live music, DJ sets, food and drinks for everyone!
A regatta designed for everyone: from experienced sailors to novices
The motto of the VELA Cup is simple and clear: everyone can participate (all you need is a boat over 3 meters long), it’ s not just whoever comes in first wins, and everyone has fun! You don’t need to be a professional, you don’t need tonnage certificates or FIV membership: you just need to have fun in a boat.
The great thing is that all boats race together in the same waters, with the same course and the same start and finish line. Thanks to the division into the two classes Cruising Boat (mainsail and jib only) and Sport Boat (also non-inferred headsails such as Gennaker, Tails, Spinnaker…) and into homogeneous groups by length, at the end of the regatta, rankings are drawn up using the VELA Cup secret fee formula. This way we all really compete together on equal terms!
The formula encourages the participation of those who are tackling a regatta for the first time, those who are experienced racers and are looking for challengers who are their bread and butter, or those who are simply looking for an excuse to sail with friends in the most beautiful corner of Sardinia.

The navy chosen by world No. 1 Jannik Sinner
One of the most prominent sportsmen of recent years, Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner, was immortalized recently – right where the VELA Cup is held – with Commander Gianfranco Bacchi, former Commander of the Italian Navy’s training ship Amerigo Vespucci and current president of the Yacht Club Cala dei Sardi. A photograph that unites the world of sailing with the world of great international tennis, taken aboard a dinghy, where world No. 1 Sinner boarded during his vacation in Sardinia.
