In the waters of the Gulf of Naples, home of the next America’s Cup, the VELA Cup Procida returns. The ‘appointment is from September 26 to 28

At the end of September, the Procida Marina will host a mosaic of boats for the second edition of the VELA Cup Procida: Classic Boats, dinghies, lateen sails, pure racing racers and round-the-world tour boats. Not forgetting the cruising ones. In short, from September 26 to 28, every kind of boat, as a tradition of the sailing festival – the VELA Cup – is invited to Procida. Without the need for any certificate, with rankings that allow every type of boat to compete on equal terms. After the huge success of the first edition, which brought the “regatta for all” to the Gulf of Naples, it is being repeated. The island of Procida and Marina di Procida(two nights free for participants subject to availability), with its picturesque villages and unforgettable views, but above all that climate that invites year-round boating, is the perfect location for a weekend getaway at the end of summer.

Procida can be reached easily from Naples, with a few miles of sailing, or by plane and ferry (again via Naples) if you want to rent a boat here and make a weekend dedicated to discovering the Phlegrean Islands. Ischia, Procida, Vivara and Nisida are all very close to each other and well worth a visit, having Marina di Procida, in the heart of the picturesque harbor, as your base. The location is ideal and the Marina is truly a five-star hotel by the sea. Then this year the week after starts in the same Marina the “Barca Mercato(October 4 to 26) showcase for those who want to sell or buy a boat.

A breathtaking route

10 miles of spectacular sailing – Starting in front of the D’Avalos Palace, continue south past Marina di Corricella and skirting the outline of the island up to Punta Serra. Once you turn the buoy you head back to the finish line always in front of the D’Avalos Palace.

The course of the VELA Cup Procida, a regatta for all that takes place on Saturday, September 27, organized in collaboration with the Municipality of Procida and the local Lega Navale, is perhaps the most evocative of the circuit. Once you leave Marina di Procida you reach the starting line, in front of the ancient fortress of Palazzo D’Avalos built in the 1500s. We head south, passing in front of the spectacular Marina Corricella, a bay that is home to the oldest fishing village on the island of Procida with its small houses all in different colors. The regatta proceeds following the outline of the island, ascending after passing theisland of Vivara to Punta Serra, in front of the Spiaggia del Postino, where one of the most beautiful scenes of the iconic last film with Massimo Troisi was filmed. The course then includes the return, after turning the buoy, with the start line turning into the finish line. Total: about 10 miles of coastal racing along the southwest coast of the island of Procida.

Cup & cooker

The VELA Cup party does not end at sea, rather…it continues ashore with food and drinks for all crews and then with the big awards ceremony!

A real regatta village comes alive at the VELA Cup in Procida, just a few miles away from where – in two years’ time – the athletes’ village that will host the America’s Cup champions will be set up. In fact, it will be Bagnoli, a neighborhood in the western area of Naples that looks toward Procida, that will welcome the America’s Cup 2027 circus, including multiple champion Peter Burling who has boarded Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team. But let’s talk about the VELA Cup village on Procida. After the regatta, which ends within a maximum time of 4 hours (3 p.m.), the big shore party comes alive in the square in Marina Grande, in the village that crowns the main harbor. In the afternoon there will be great refreshments with beer and fried fish cuoppo for all crews, as well as many other local culinary specialties. And from 6:30 p.m., the VELA Cup Procida prize-giving starts, with prizes for those who did best at sea (according to the rankings compiled with the circuit’s secret fee) and for the lucky ones who win raffle prizes offered by VELA Cup partners. Procida is the perfect island for an end-of-summer vacation: it is positioned between two channels that are always breezy, ideal for those who want to sail year-round, and unlike more tourist destinations, here the authentic soul of the island endures. Then on Monday, September 29, the day after the VELA Cup weekend, the island’s patron saint St. Michael is celebrated, with a feast and procession in the old village: a unique atmosphere.
